On a historic spring day in 1990, shortly after the Washington State legislature boldly passed the Growth Management Act (GMA), Futurewise was founded by local citizens as the State’s primary advocate to ensure that cities, counties, and communities manage growth as envisioned by the GMA.

Since then, Futurewise and our friends across the state have successfully protected millions of acres of farmland, forests, and shorelines by limiting development on fragile resource lands and habitat, and we’ll keep at it for the next 20 years as growth pressures become increasingly more urgent in our state.
