577 acres of upland habitat protection is not enough for Yakima’s Wildlife!

Please attend the Yakima County Commissioner’s Hearing on Tuesday July 7

Tell the commissioners:

·         Discussing solutions that will protect water quality and wildlife habitat while allowing reasonable development was the right thing to do. This solution-based approach will save tax payers money. The proposed amendments to the critical areas regulations and comprehensive plan will resolve many issues on appeal.

·         I urge the Board of County Commissioners to refine the amendments to better protect water quality, fish, and wildlife.  The regulations should clarify that developments that may adversely affect the habitat of an endangered, threatened, or sensitive species are required to assess and avoid or mitigate their impacts on the habitat.

·         I support the county’s use of the Gap Analysis Project (GAP) and other reliable data in preparing the “Upland Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas of Yakima County” map. The map will help protect the richest areas for wildlife while allowing for development areas where development makes sense.

·         I agree with the proposed amendments to protect the habitats of endangered, threatened and sensitive species wherever they are found. This is the only way these imperiled species can make a recovery. Recovering these species and protecting the richest habitats is necessary to protect our quality of life and preserve our local character which draws tourists and provides recreational opportunities for county residents and visitors.
