Futurewise Whatcom Gains New Chapter Director
Kate Blystone is the newly hired Chapter Director for Futurewise Whatcom and its dedicated local Steering Committee.
Kate brings over 11 years of experience working for the public, private, and non-profit sector, on a wide variety of projects and policies, including the Whatcom County urban growth area update and the Foothills Subarea Plan among other projects in communities across Washington state. For the past year, she has worked as a planner and public involvement specialist for BergerABAM, where she worked with a broad range of stakeholders on planning issues. Prior to that, Kate worked for Whatcom County where she focused on long-range planning, growth management strategies, and public engagement. Kate also served as secretary for the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association from 2009-2011.
“Growing up on a small family farm in eastern Washington, I have a deep passion for the land and for how our decisions today impact our future.,” said Kate Blystone. “I’m excited to use my planning and policy experience to help find creative and collaborative solutions to make our communities socially and environmentally stronger.”
Futurewise Whatcom is the first and only local chapter of Futurewise. The chapter is headed by its director and a ten member Steering Committee. As chapter director, Kate coordinates Futurewise’s local advocacy, community education, and technical assistance work in the county.
Blystone is the second Chapter Director for Futurewise Whatcom. She replaces Cathy Lehman, who left in April to focus on marketing and communications for small businesses at the Center for Economic Vitality through WWU’s College of Business and Economics.
Kate is a graduate of Western Washington University and will finish her Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at Eastern Washington University in August. She and her husband Vern are delighted to be returning to Whatcom County after living in Vancouver, Washington for the last year.
