Hey Tacoma, let science do the talking!

Document Actions
Tell the Tacoma City Council you're behind them - that you support stronger protections for Puget Sound.

We don't know about you, but we like facts to be based on science.  Especially when those facts are the basis for really important decisions. Like the future of Puget Sound.

That may sound extreme or an exaggeration, but if we're serious about cleaning the Puget Sound by 2020, like Tacoma, the State Legislature and our Governor have said that we are,  then we need to roll up our sleeves today.

Please click here to email the City Council and tell them the future of Puget Sound is in their hands - and that you support stronger protections based on science.

If you'll remember, Tacoma is in the process of updating its Critical Areas Ordinance Protection (CAPO).  Last month, the Planning Commission passed its recommendations on to the City Council.  Much of the Planning Commission's recommendations are a huge improvement which we strongly support.

However, alongside Citizens for A Healthy Bay, Tahoma Audubon and People for Puget Sound, we're asking the City Council to make one change that's critical to a CAPO that balances urban development and a clean Puget Sound.

The Planning Commission reduced the buffer at Tacoma Narrows South and Point Defiance to 50 feet.  We think it should be brought back to 115 feet. Why? Science.  The best available science says that 115 is the minimum needed to protect the Sound's values and functions.

So that's what we're asking for, simple but necessary. And here's where you come in.

The City Council is under pressure to keep this buffer at the lower, non-scientific 50 feet.  We need your help to show the City Council that their constituents understand their need to look beyond private or political interests, in order to continue advocating for the public interest.
