Futurewise is working to protect the remaining farmland in the Puyallup Valley. The Pierce County Council is now developing its 20 year vision for the land between Sumner and Orting, known as the Alderton-McMillin Community Plan. We’ve been working with local farmers and friends to improve the plan so that it protects more of the Valley’s rich soils from conversion to strip malls and subdivisions.

The good news is that our hard work is already starting to pay off. After hearing public comments from Futurewise and local citizens, the Planning Commission revised its recommendations for the Alderton-McMillin Community Plan by removing the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) receiving areas on all of the Valley’s farmland.

Now we’re working to get the County Council to adopt the Planning Commission's recommended plan with a few additional improvements so our resource lands will be better protected from being paved over.
