Local Advocacy
Land use decisions – the answers to the question, “What are we going to build next, and where are we going to build it?” – are the core of Futurewise’s mission and the smart growth movement.
In Washington, the majority of these issues are decided in the major updates to local comprehensive plans and critical areas ordinances required by the Growth Management Act.
- About comprehensive plans
- About critical areas ordinances
- About development regulations
- Current status of comprehensive plans
Futurewise is in the thick of these important updates, working in counties around the state with a broad range of local groups and organizations, concerned citizens, and opinion leaders to persuade local officials to make responsible choices about growth in our communities. Our local organizing will result in protecting tens of thousands of acres of family farms from development, increasing protections for drinking water, rivers, streams, wetlands and other sensitive areas, and preventing floods and landslides on property.
