In the City of Spokane Creating Complete Streets is a "Go"!

It is important to thank and educate our leaders! Please take a moment today to thank those who voted yes, and remind those who voted "no" that the Spokane Regional Health District is hosting an important workshop for them to learn more. You can do this in one step with our online form  here!

Thanks to a broad coaltion that lead the effort to create safe and complete streets in Spokane and the support of Futurewise members and our friends and neighbors, the creation of a complete streets ordinance will move forward. Please thank Councilperson Jon Snyder for his visionary leadership on this and Council Members Corker, Rush, Shogan and Waldref for their contribution to the discussion and votes. Your attendence, letters, emails, statuses, tweets, blogs and outreach to your friends and neighbors made this possible!

With the passing of April 5ths resolution city planning and engineering staff, council members and other decision makers will be encouraged to attend a workshop put on by the national Complete Streets Coalition that will help them update the city's regulations and create a publlic participation plan for the crafting of a complete streets ordinance.

We have some great blog coverage and media coverage.

Blueprint for Transit Oriented Communities Comes to Spokane:

BLUEPRINT exhibition

April 2nd "Transit-Oriented Communities: A Blueprint for Washington State," co-authored by statewide non-profit organizations Futurewise and Transportation Choices Coalition and integrated design firm, GGLO will come to Spokane and be showing all month long. The publication presents an image-rich vision of TOC, provides research linking TOC patterns to numerous social and environmental benefits, analyzes station areas in the state, and lays out policy actions from the local to federal level to encourage more TOC patterns. Meet our Urban Strategies Director Sara Nikolic and learn more on April 2nd from 5 to 9 pm at the Saranac Building, 25 W Main Ave. Downtown Spokane. More details here! Or find it on facebook here.

Alan Grainger, founding principal of GGLO, said, "Our transit networks will ultimately catalyze new development in station areas. People will choose these places to live, work and play-but only if they are places that people love. For this to happen, visionary planning and design must go hand-in-hand with smart policies and attention to the unique qualities of each community."

I Connectivity update: Thanks so much to everyone who sent a valentine to the commissioners or attended the deliberations last week. Your presence and the presence of KYRS elevates the level of discourse in these important discussions about the future of the entire county. We received positive feedback from Commissioners Mager and Richard about the Valentines and are optimistic about the prospects of a greatly improved connectivity policy in Spokane County that integrates better with the City of Spokane.
