Week of April 5th: Legislative Update

You know that part of the superhero movie, toward the end when it seems like the heroes are outnumbered and outgunned? We know that our heroes will win in the end, but at that moment, it’s not clear how.

That’s the moment we’re at with HB 1099. Despite its incredible momentum, despite hundreds of people like you making their voices heard in support, despite flying past all previous cutoffs, HB 1099 didn’t make it out of the Senate transportation committee last week.

We can still end this legislative session with a win, with legislation that adds climate to the GMA. But we don’t have a lot of time to make it happen. We have just six days until the final Senate cut off on April 11.

We’ve got a plan, but I need your help if we’re going to win. We’ve already drafted an amendment to HB 1241 (a different GMA update bill) to incorporate the language from HB 1099. Now we need to move as quickly as possible to approve this amendment and pass HB 1241.

Below, you’ll find three things you can do right now. Things are going to be moving quickly this week, so please stay tuned for more action alerts between now and April 11th:

Email your Senator and ask them to vote YES to amend HB1241. Use this action alert.

Keeping an Eye on HB 1220

Climate isn’t our only focus this legislative session: it’s just as critical to see HB 1220, our housing justice bill, over the finish line. HB 1220 passed out of the Senate Ways & Means Committee this week and now it’s headed to the floor for a vote.

We’re starting to see pressure to weaken HB 1220 but we’re working hard behind the scenes to keep the core of HB 1220 intact: a bill to prevent housing discrimination and ensure housing options for everybody, at any income, in every community.
