Growing Together: Legislative Update Week 8

Week of March 3 Legislative Update

Friends, we’re reaching the halfway mark for legislative session- full of deadlines where a lot of bills die, and won’t make it any further this year. It’s a good time to look back on where we started, and why we do the work we do- how we are committed to growing together

Across Washington, we’re being pushed out of our communities because of high rents and home prices. We’re facing increasingly severe weather, more destructive floods and wildfires, worsening smoke seasons each summer, and more. But the Futurewise team is hopeful- we know that we can tackle these challenges and come out stronger, healthier, and more connected. There are common-sense solutions we can put in place- like small apartments near new light rail stations, and protecting rural homes from wildfire.

And while we know what needs to be done, it still takes a lot of pressure and support to make sure that elected officials prioritize these policies, especially in the face of so much political turbulence.

So we’re going to continue our work- together, and every action you take, email you forward to your friends and family, and call you make to your legislators has an impact!

Sprouts & Shouts Week of Action!

From now until March 12, the full House and Senate chambers are in what we like to call Floor Action Frenzy- voting on tons of bills -and this is a hugely important time for our priorities. To make sure our bills are heard, we’re hosting a BIG week of action!

Every morning, we’ll be in your inbox with an action of the day– something easy you can do to raise your voice, and make sure lawmakers know what matters to our communities.

Get ready: Be sure to check your inbox, follow us on social media, and send this to your friends so they can get in on the action. Together, let’s reach 1,000 emails and calls to our lawmakers.

If you were forwarded this email, click the button below to sign up for our week of action email alerts.

Here’s a glance at the calendar- we’ll have targeted actions for our various priority bills, and different ways to reach out to lawmakers.

Transit-Oriented Development – HB 1491

You may have seen us in your inbox more this week- that’s because transit-oriented development had two important hearings and a vote. Thanks to your incredible support and willingness to take action, 1,744 people signed in PRO in support of this bill! And just today it survived a vote in the Capital Budget Committee and will move forward.

These actions matter. The opposition has gotten mobilized, and they nearly closed the gap on our support numbers this week. So thank you for your work, and TOD is now moving forward in the legislative process. We’ll reach out with more actions to be sure this critical bill makes it across the finish line this year.

Phonebank for Rent Stabilization – HB 1217/SB 5222

Just can’t wait for tomorrow’s Sprouts and Shouts week of action to start? Register today for phonebanking with the Low Income Housing Alliance to support Rent Stabilization. They have several opportunities, but we’re hoping to get a group on Tuesday, March 11th- click the button below to sign up.

That’s a wrap for week 8 updates, we hope you’ll join us for this coming week of action.
