Week of January 30 Legislative Update

Another Sunday is here, and that means another set of actions! We have good momentum going thanks to you and all the actions you’ve taken, so thank you! Let’s keep it up; here is what is coming up this week!

Victory for HB 1181:

On Wednesday, January 25th, our GMA Climate bill, HB 1811, was successfully voted out of the House Local Government Committee! A big thank you to everyone who signed-in PRO, who testified for, and to the committee members who voted yes! This is a great step forward and we’re very excited to keep moving forward.

Sign in PRO for SB 5466

Futurewise is a big proponent of ensuring housing and transit belong together, also known as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). That’s why we need you to sign in PRO for our TOD bill, SB 5466, by this Tuesday at 7am!

Remember: Do not select an organization when signing in.

Vote NO for SB 5357

As you may have read last week, Washington’s rural areas are at risk due to SB 5357, currently under consideration by the Senate Local Government & Tribal Affairs Committee. The House Housing committee already voted yes on the companion bill, HB 1133.

SB 5357 is poorly crafted legislation that would allow the construction of Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (DADUs) outside of our designated Urban Growth Areas. While DADUs (or backyard cottages) can be a great housing resource in our existing cities and towns, they aren’t a good fit for rural areas for a few main reasons. Our two major concerns about increasing detached ADUs outside UGAs are water and greenhouse gas emissions (read more here.)

This is why we need you to tell the Senate Local Government & Tribal Affairs Committee to vote NO on SB 5357.

Lobby Day Signups!

There’s still time to sign up for the For Our Future lobby day on February 8th! You have until this Wednesday, Feb 1st, to RSVP. It will be a great time, with opportunities to get involved but virtually and in-person. Sign up today!

That’s all we have this week! As always, thank you for your support.
